As the Joint Tumor Section approaches its 40th anniversary, guidelines activity remains an important component of its contribution to organized neurosurgery. The guidelines committee continues to carry forward with its core mission of tumor guidelines development and updates. The guidelines for Functioning Pituitary Adenomas are in the final steps of preparation for submission to the Joint Guidelines Review Committee. The update of the Low-Grade Glioma guidelines has been completed Joint Guidelines Review Committee and is awaiting AANS and CNS leadership review and endorsement. The update for the Vestibular Schwannoma Guidelines is currently with the Joint Guidelines Review Committee. The updates for the nonfunctioning pituitary adenoma guideline, and for emerging therapies for metastatic brain tumors, are still with the writing groups.

A new proposal for development of a guideline for management of craniopharyngiomas has been advanced and is just beginning development steps.

It is important that the membership be aware of the new classification of guidelines called Practice Parameters. This is meant for topics for which there is not a large amount of high-quality published literature, but for which a member or associated organization believes some form of organized guidance is indicated. Examples where this might be applied include rare tumors or uncommon circumstances encountered in the management of more commonly treated tumor types not already addressed in documents currently published by neurosurgical or other organizations. This mechanism is currently being used by other joint CNS/AANS sections and the Joint Tumor Section should certainly take part in this to demonstrate our willingness to share What Matters with the medical community. The steps to initiate this are available on the CNS Guidelines website.
