Biennial Section on Tumors Symposium

Thank you to all the members who attended and supported the Section on Tumors Biennial Symposium, held last September 8-9, 2023, in Washington, DC. The meeting was highly successful with an unprecedented number of registrants five folds higher than in previous years.  Congratulations and thanks to the 2023 meeting chair Dr. Gelareh Zadeh, co-chairs Dr. Chetan Bettegowda and Dr. Pablo Recinos, as well as section chair Dr. Isabelle Germano. Their dedication and hard work were instrumental in orchestrating such a successful event.

Highlights of the symposium included inspiring keynote speeches. Dr. David Louis delivered a motivational speech on the implications of the updated WHO tumor classification at the time of recurrence, while Dr. Evanthia Galanis provided a comprehensive overview of clinical trial options during recurrence.

Out of a breakthrough number of submitted abstracts, more than 100 were selected for scientific presentations, including 37 oral presentations with published abstracts in Clinical Neurosurgery, April 2024. The meeting spotlighted critical areas of tumor recurrence and emphasized the neurosurgeon’s pivotal role in addressing gliomas, skull base tumors, brain and spine metastases and recurrent tumors. The Section on Tumors is grateful to its industry and philanthropy partners for their continued support who made this event even more successful.

Additionally, the inaugural Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) two-day course was a resounding success. This course facilitated valuable integration and exchange on key topics surrounding the roles and dynamics of APPs in neurosurgical oncology, as well as effective management strategies.

The Anniversary Gala highlighted the well-deserved Section’s Career Awardees:

The Mark Rosenblum Distinguished Service Award — Dr. Roberta Glick

The Charles B. Wilson Excellence Award — Dr. Linda Liau

The Andrew T. Parsa Mentorship Award — Dr. E. Antonio Chiocca

The Global Neurosurgery Oncology Inaugural Award — Dr. Kate Drummond
