The Tumor Section Guidelines Committee continues activity on a number of fronts within neurosurgery and in neuro-oncology outside of neurosurgery. To the second point, the Joint Tumor Section was recently asked to comment on the American College of Radiology’s Appropriateness Criteria for “Malignant or Aggressive Primary Musculoskeletal Tumor – Staging and Surveillance (Revised)”. Prior to that, the Joint Tumor Section was asked to review the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO)-sponsored Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) commissioned Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Systematic Review for Radiation Therapy for Brain Metastases. The final draft has been reviewed by Joint Tumor Section Members and Affirmation of Educational Value was recommended.
On the neurosurgical front, with thanks to all the Joint Tumor Section writers and writers from other specialties, the Progressive Glioblastoma Guidelines Update was published in hard copy as a special issue in the Journal of Neuro-oncology in June 2022. A new guideline in development, on a topic not previously addressed as a guideline by this organization, is the Functioning Pituitary Adenoma Guideline led by Isabelle Germano, MD, FAANS, FACS, and D. Ryan Ormond, MD, PhD, FAANS. The section is also working with the Joint Spine Section to develop a guideline document for metastatic spine tumors. Finally, the committee is fortunate to have expert volunteers from within neurosurgery and from outside specialties currently working on updates for the management of low-grade gliomas, nonfunctioning pituitary adenomas and vestibular schwannomas.
