The AANS/CNS section on Tumors once again received a record number of exceptional abstracts for the 2022 Congress of Neurological Surgeons Meeting and it was quite challenging to narrow them down and select 12 abstracts to receive recognition. Among them, we introduced a new focus for the “AANS/CNS Joint Section Tumor Neuro-Oncology Trainee Award.” This $1,000 honorarium will be given each meeting to a “high-ranking brain tumor clinical or basic science abstract submitted by a trainee from a rising program defined as an institution that has received two or less awards since 2015.” The inaugural honor was bestowed upon Diogo Garcia, MD of the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, with Alfredo Quinones-Hinojosa, MD, FAANS, FACS, as the principal investigator. It is the commitment of the AANS/CNS Section on Tumors Executive Committee to identify and support programs that are clearly excelling in brain tumor research and academic neurosurgical oncology.

We are also pleased to announce a new award, “The Gladiator Project Award,” which will be featured for the first time at the 2023 AANS Annual Scientific Meeting as part of the AANS/CNS section on Tumors Awards roster. This recognition will be given to a high scoring translational abstract on adult glioblastoma (GBM) by a medical student, resident, fellow or attending physician. It will be presented at both the CNS and AANS annual meetings and will be associated with a $1,000 honorarium afforded by the generosity of the Gladiator Project.

Congratulations to all who submitted abstracts this year, we look forward to the presentations. And special well wishes to the following CNS 2022 awardees for their outstanding work:
