Updates from the Research Sub-Committee include:

  1. In person didactic/interactive breakout sessions at the 2023 Tumor Satellite Symposium on September 8 and 9, Washington, DC, which will be focused on career development for the neurosurgeon-scientist. Topics will include submitting IND/IDE, translational research lab development and grant writing.
  2. Developing a mentorship program for early career faculty submitting grants.

Call for applications are open and look for early career neurosurgeons pursuing NIH or NIH equivalent grants. Applicants will need to submit a specific aims page and commit to at least six zoom meetings with their mentor. The expectation is to submit their grant by the end of the program and present at the Tumor Section meeting.

  1. Continued collaboration with NREF: Selected members from our committee participated in reviewing the 2023 NREF brain/spine tumor grants applications. While these reviews are still in progress, we anticipate announcing the awardees names at the 2023 AANS Annual Scientific Meeting \.

In collaboration with Neurosurgery Research & Education Foundation (NREF), the           Section on Tumors provides six 50K ($300k total) research grants on brain                  and spine tumors to top scoring applicants, funded as:

  • The Andrew T. Parsa Clinical Investigator Award
  • The AANS/CNS Section on Tumor Young Clinical Investigator Award
  • The StacheStrong Research Fellowship Grants (two/year)
  • The Southeastern Brain Tumor Foundation (SBTF) Research Fellowship Grant
  • The Gladiator Project Research Fellowship Grant
