2020 International Observership Program Thrives as Educational and Bridge-building Initiative

Franco Rubino, MD, of Tucumán, Argentina, spent three unique months at the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in Miami, observing with Ricardo Komotar, MD, FAANS, FACS, CNS Foundation Board member and director of the UM Residency Program and director of the UM Surgical Neurooncology Fellowship Program and Michael E. Ivan, MD, MBS, FAANS, director of research for the UM Brain Tumor Initiative.

According to Dr. Komotar, “Dr. Rubino was an integral part of our brain tumor team, involved in clinical care, research projects and observing surgery. He brought an international and valued perspective to patient management.”

Inaugural International Observership Program (IOP)

The AANS/CNS Tumor Section, in conjunction with the CNS Foundation, is pleased to announce the 3rd Annual International Observership Program (IOP), which will provide an Argentinean/Uruguayan neurosurgeon the opportunity to participate as an observer for three months at the University of Miami in the division of surgical neurooncology. The rotation focuses on all tumors of the central nervous system, with participation in clinic, conferences, surgery and consultations. An announcement will be made in early spring 2021 for the next round of applications.

The rotation will be in the fall/winter of 2021 and consists of a scholarship/grant of $25,000 (including air travel, accommodations and expenses during the observership). Requirements include:

  • Must be 35 years of age or younger
  • Final year of residency, chief resident or up to two years post-residency
  • Recommendation letter from the director of the candidate’s residency program
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Description of project on basic or clinical research in the field of neurooncology

Each observer is required to provide a monthly report of activities highlighting the most significant/relevant learning during the observership/apprenticeship. The observer will also write a paper on the experience during the observership for publication in the Revista Argentina de Neurocirugia. The observer will also present the results of their clinical investigation project at SNOLA 2021 or 2022.
