History of Women in Neurosurgery (WINS)

While the year 2020 brought unprecedented global changes with the COVID -19 pandemic, it also brought a time of celebration of 30 years of WINS. The JNS Focus this spring highlighted topics related to International Women Leaders in Neurosurgery: Past and Present, and among the articles it also featured “The History of Women in Neurosurgery (WINS)” detailing three decades of achievements since the group’s inception.

The article showcases the history of WINS over three decades. It starts with the group’s inception in 1989 and details its early years. It then explores its second decade including the 10 and 20 year celebrations and achievements during this time, including the Louise Eisenhardt Award and the Sherry Apple Award, and details the beginning of the Louise Eisenhardt Lecture Series, and includes lists of prior award winners and lecturers including more recent awards. In the next section, the third decade, the paper describes further accomplishments of the group and its members into current times.
