The meeting\u2019s theme: \u201c<em>Brain and Spine Recurrent Tumors: The Neurosurgeon\u2019s Role,<\/em>\u201d coupled with the meeting location and the world-renowned experts, are tremendous attractants to the participants. This resulted in a <strong>historically highest number of submitted abstracts and meeting registrations <\/strong>to theAANS\/CSN Section on Tumors Symposium. <strong>Gelareh Zadeh<\/strong>, scientific chair, and <strong>Pablo Recinos<\/strong> and <strong>Chetan Bettegowda<\/strong>, co-chairs, have done a superb job with its scientific program to include four sessions highlighting neurosurgery challenges and updates in caring for patients with recurrent glioblastoma, meningiomas, brain and spine metastatic disease. In alignment with the CNS 2023 theme \u201c<em>Imagine, Innovate, Inspire<\/em>\u201d, the Tumor Session Symposium is weaved with new ideas, interactive discussions, innovative content and mentoring opportunities. A <strong>special segment for the Advance Practice Providers (APPs) will take place each day<\/strong>. Please join us at the <strong>Symposium Gala on Friday, September 8,<\/strong> to network and celebrate the 16th AANS\/CNS Section on Tumors Symposium Awardees.<\/p>\n<p>The executive committee (EC) members I convened, led by the chairs and co-chairs of the EC sub-committees, have been very active over the past six months working at the sections\u2019 goals. Please join me in thanking each of them for their voluntarism and hard work. Below is a summary of their recent accomplishments while continuing to build upon the goals and deliverables I set forth when I started my post as section chair.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>To facilitate partnership within the executive committee, the neurosurgical oncology community and beyond. <\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Leveraging the great success of \u201c<em>Headlines<\/em>\u201d, an interactive series to facilitate partnership within the section leaders and to provide role model examples to our trainees and young neurosurgeons, the <u>Development and Partnership<\/u> sub-committee, under the leadership of <strong>Brian Nahed<\/strong> (chair) and <strong>Susan Pannullo<\/strong> (co-chair), is hosting a new series: \u201c<em>Future Leaders<\/em>\u201d, highlighting junior faculty and fellows and their clinical and scientific work and career plans in neurosurgical oncology. <strong>Randy Jansen<\/strong> (chair) and <strong>Isaac Yang<\/strong> (co-chair) with the <u>Membership and Membership Services<\/u> sub-committee provide important deliverables to our members. <strong>Kimberly Hoang<\/strong> (chair) and <strong>Claire Karekezi<\/strong> (co-chair) with the <u>Communication<\/u> sub-committee are facilitating agile communication across the globe. <strong>Garni Barkhoudarian<\/strong> (editor) and <strong>Kristin Huntoon <\/strong>(assistant editor) assembled this great <u>Newsletter<\/u>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>To enhance our section\u2019s education and research leadership in brain and spine tumors<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Gelareh Zadeh<\/strong> (chair) and <strong>Analiz Rodriguez<\/strong> (co-chair) provide leadership to organize and amplify our <u>Education<\/u> portfolio. <strong>Maryam Rahman<\/strong> (chair) and <strong>Chetan Bettegowda<\/strong> (co-chair) guide our section\u2019s mission to support, mentor and encourage <u>research<\/u>. Additionally, we work closely with the NREF to support and raise funding for research grants. The section\u2019s <u>CNS 2023 Scientific Program<\/u> is a testament to the superb leadership of <strong>Tiffany Hodges<\/strong> (<strong>chair<\/strong>) and <strong>Kimberly Hoang, MD, Wajd Al-Holou, MD<\/strong> (co-chairs). <strong>Jeff Olson<\/strong> (chair) and <strong>Ryan Ormond<\/strong> (co-chair) continue the productive leadership of CNS tumor <u>Guidelines<\/u>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>To award an increased number of \u201cthe best and the brightest\u201d acknowledging distanced traveled.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Under the leadership of <strong>Jennifer Moliterno<\/strong> (chair), <strong>Frank Attenello and Will Curry<\/strong> (co-chairs), the Awards sub-committee continues to expand our award portfolio with <strong><u>20 Awards given at the CNS 2023<\/u><\/strong> and re-focusing on different aspects of the section\u2019s very talented contributors.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>To provide continued collaborations with neurosurgery and other organizations focused on brain and spine tumors.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Our section\u2019s collaborative efforts are led by individuals and subcommittee chairs as following: <strong>Steve Kalkanis<\/strong> with <u>ABNS<\/u>; <strong>Christopher Cifarelli<\/strong> with <u>ASTRO<\/u>;<strong> Linda Liau<\/strong> (chair) with <u>CAST<\/u>; <strong>Stephanie Cheok and Christian Bowers<\/strong> (co-chairs) with the <u>Early Career Neurosurgeons Committee<\/u> (ECNC);\u00a0 <strong>Ian Parney <\/strong>(Chair) <u>Historian<\/u>;<strong> Jason Sheehan <\/strong>(editor) with <u>JNO<\/u><strong>; Linda Bi<\/strong> (chair) and <strong>Dan Prevedello<\/strong> (co-chair) with <u>Skull-Base<\/u> focused projects; <strong>Lissa Baird<\/strong> (chair) and <strong>Anthony Wang<\/strong> (co-chair) with <u>Pediatrics<\/u>; <strong>Christopher Newman<\/strong> with SANS; <strong>Tiffany Hodges<\/strong> with the <u>Washington Committee<\/u>; <strong>Andrew Sloan<\/strong> and <strong>Michael Vogelbaum<\/strong> with the <u>Coding and Reimbursement Committee<\/u> (CRC); <strong>Ekk Kasper<\/strong> (chair) and <strong>Kate Drummond<\/strong> (co-chair) with <u>Global Neurosurgery<\/u>; <strong>Tracy Batchelor<\/strong> with the Society of <u>Neuro-Oncology<\/u> (SNO); <strong>Paul Gardner<\/strong> with the <u>CNS Foundation<\/u>; <strong>Christopher Newman<\/strong> with <u>SANS<\/u>; <strong>Nicholas Szerlip<\/strong> (chair) and <strong>Nam D. Tran<\/strong> (co-chair) with <u>Spine Oncology<\/u>. A special thank you to <strong>Costas Hadjipanayis<\/strong> serving as s<u>ection\u2019s <\/u>s<u>ecretary\/<\/u>t<u>reasurer<\/u>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>To update our section\u2019s bylaws after five years since its last revisions.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Edjah Nduom<\/strong> (chair) and the Bylaws sub-committee spearheaded our section\u2019s Rules and Regulations update. This was ratified by both parent organizations in the Spring of 2023.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>To provide leadership for cutting-edge clinical trials and innovation.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Brad Elder<\/strong> (chair) and <strong>Gavin Dunn<\/strong> (co-chair) lead the <u>Clinical Trial and Registries<\/u> efforts focused on how to enhance our leadership role in clinical trial\/registries development and enrollment by collaborating with our neuro-oncologist and radiation oncologist colleagues. <strong>Evanthia Galanis<\/strong> and <strong>Mark Gilbert<\/strong> (chairs) partner with us to bring the latest expertise in <u>Medical Oncology<\/u>. <strong>Chris Cifarelli<\/strong> (chair) and <strong>Lola Chambless<\/strong> (co-chair) lead the <u>Innovation and Technology<\/u> efforts with new emphasis on the various technological advances our field is pioneering.<\/p>\n<p>These are exciting times in neurosurgical oncology and for the Section on Tumors. <strong>I look forward to continuing our partnership and connecting with you in Washington, DC<\/strong>.
