The Tumor Section Awards Committee continues to develop the most robust award program for outstanding research of any of the AANS\/CNS sections. Each year, we give 12 awards, plus one named lectureship at the AANS Annual Scientific Meeting and nine awards, plus one lectureship every-other-year, at the CNS annual meeting. Additionally, we offer three awards at our Biennial Tumor Satellite Symposia. Most of the awards are limited to Tumor Section members, providing an additional incentive for membership.<\/p>\n

The AANS\/CNS Section on Tumors extends its gratitude to the award sponsors for helping to encourage submission of the highest quality work in neuro-oncology.<\/p>\n

The nine Tumor Section award winners at the 2018 CNS annual meeting, and the Gupta Award lectureship given at the SNO meeting, are shown below.<\/p>\n

The section is looking forward to recognizing 12 award winners at the 2019 AANS Annual Scientific Meeting, as summarized in the table below. Congratulations!<\/em><\/p>\n

Abhijit Guha Award and Lecture<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dr. Linda Liau, MD, PhD, MBA is the recipient of the Abhijit Guha Award at SNO 2018.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Dr. Linda Liau, MD, PhD, MBA, FAANS, is the recipient of the 2018 Abhijit Guha Award for her outstanding scientific contributions with clinical and research relevance in the field of brain tumors.<\/p>\n

The Abhijit Guha Award and lecture are jointly sponsored by the Society of Neuro-Oncology (SNO). The award is given annually at the SNO and CNS meeting, alternatively. The winner is a physician scientist making great strides in the laboratory and clinical advances of brain tumors.<\/p>\n

2018 Congress of Neurological Surgeons Awardees<\/h2>\n

American Brain Tumor Association Young Investigator Award<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dr. Wataru Ishida, MD, receives the American Brain Tumor Association Young Investigator Award at the 2018 CNS meeting from Dr. Gordon Li, Tumor Section I Moderator.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Dr. Wataru Ishida<\/strong>, MD,<\/strong> is the recipient of the American Brain Tumor Association Award given at the CNS 2018 meeting for the work entitled, \u201c<\/em>In Vivo Synergistic Effect of Checkpoint Blockade and Radiation Therapy Against Chordomas in a Humanized Mouse Model.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sponsored by the American Brain Tumor Association, the Young Investigator Award is given at the AANS and the CNS meetings to a young faculty member involved in neuro-oncology research who has demonstrated outstanding potential for future basic science research. The applicant must have been out of training for less than six years. A $2,000 honorarium accompanies this award.<\/p>\n

BrainLab Neurosurgery Award<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mohana Rao Patibandla MBBS, MCh<\/strong>, is the recipient of the BrainLab Neurosurgery Award given at the CNS 2018 meeting for the work entitled \u201c<\/em>Stereotactic Radiosurgery for Skull Base Meningiomas: 20-year Long-term Outcomes with Volumetric Analysis.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Brainlab Neurosurgery Award is presented at the annual meetings of the AANS and CNS. This award is given to a neurosurgeon practicing in a nonacademic or international setting with the best abstract related to central nervous system tumors. Previous AANS\/CNS Section on Tumors chairs Michael McDermott, MD, FAANS, and Ronald Warnick, MD, FAANS, were instrumental in securing this award, given through the generosity of Brainlab. The award carries an honorarium of $1,000.<\/p>\n

Columbia Softball Pediatric Brain Tumor Award<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jeffrey P. Greenfield, MD, PhD, FAANS, <\/strong>is the recipient of the Columbia Softball Charity Award, presented at the CNS 2018 meeting for the work entitled, \u201cPrecision Sequencing Algorithm in Pediatric Neurosurgery.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Columbia Softball Pediatric Brain Tumor Award is given at each AANS\/CNS meeting to the best pediatric tumor abstract submitted by a resident or faculty member who is a member of the Section on Tumors. The section would like to acknowledge previous Section Chairs Jeff Bruce, MD, FAANS, Fred Barker, MD, FAANS, and Rich Anderson, MD, FAANS, for putting together the plan to use a portion of the proceeds from the annual tournament to support this award. The award carries an honorarium of $1,000.<\/p>\n

Integra Foundation Award<\/strong><\/p>\n

Evgeniya Tyrtova, MD, <\/strong>is the recipient of the Integra Award given at the CNS 2018 meeting for the presentation entitled \u201cMeningioma with Multiple Drivers: Genomic Landscape and Clinical Correlations.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Integra Foundation Award, sponsored by the Integra Foundation, is given at both the AANS and CNS meetings for the best research or clinical paper submitted investigating benign brain, spinal or peripheral nerve tumors. The award carries an honorarium of $1,000.<\/p>\n

Rosenblum- Mahaley Clinical Research Award<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pascal Zinn, MD, PhD, <\/strong>is the recipient of the Rosenblum-Mahaley Clinical Research Award given at the CNS 2018 meeting for the presentation entitled, \u201dRadiomic machine Learning Algorithms Discriminate Pseudo-Progression from True Progression in Glioblastoma Patients: A Multi-Institutional Study.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Rosemblum-Mahaley Award is given at each of the AANS and CNS meetings to a neurosurgery resident, fellow or attending physician who submits the best clinical study in neuro-oncology. Special recognition is given to innovative approaches and those that lead to improved patient outcomes and quality of life.<\/p>\n

About twenty-five years ago, just after founding the Section, Mark Rosenblum, MD, FAANS(L), established the Mahaley Clinical Award in honor of his friend and colleague, Steve Mahaley, MD, who was terminally ill at the time of the award’s inception. While this award was not independently funded, it has been a hallmark of the Section. In 2018, Dr. Rosenblum and his wife Pam pledged funds to continue this award in perpetuity. The award was re-named the Rosenblum-Mahaley Clinical Research Award. The recipient is awarded a $1,000 honorarium.<\/p>\n

Preuss Research Award<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ezequiel Goldschmidt, MD, PhD, <\/strong>is the recipient of the Preuss Young Scientist Award presented at the CNS 2018 meeting for the work entitled: \u201cCerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) Can Inhibit Wound Healing and Induce CSF Leaks by Inhibiting Angiogenesis.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

Sponsored by the Preuss Foundation, the Preuss Research Award is given at each of the AANS and CNS meetings to a young scientist investigating brain tumors, within 10 years of training, who has submitted the best basic science research paper. This award has a $1,000 honorarium.<\/p>\n

Joseph Paul Antonios PhD,<\/strong> is the recipient of the Springer Journal of Neuro-Oncology Award, given at the CNS 2018 meeting for the work entitled, \u201cNon-invasive Monitoring of Immunotherapeutic Responses in Glioblastoma using Novel Imaging Techniques.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Springer Journal of Neuro-Oncology Award is presented at both the AANS and CNS annual meetings to a highly-ranked abstract in either clinical or basic science, as related to neuro-oncology. This award is sponsored by the generosity of Springer. It carries a $1,000 honorarium.<\/p>\n

Little MD, FAANS, <\/strong>is the recipient of the AANS\/CNS Section on Tumors Skull Base Award, given at the CNS 2018 meeting for the presentation entitled, \u201cComparison of Volumetric Extent of Tumor Resection from a Prospective Multicenter Controlled Study of Fully Endoscopic vs. Microscopic Trans-sphenoidal Surgery for Nonfunctioning Pituitary Adenomas: The TRANSSPHER Study.\u201d<\/p>\n

Amar S.
