{"id":224,"date":"2019-10-17T14:43:16","date_gmt":"2019-10-17T14:43:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/f0c1857d78.nxcli.net\/tumor\/?page_id=224"},"modified":"2019-10-18T15:47:56","modified_gmt":"2019-10-18T15:47:56","slug":"snossa-update","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/newsletters.aans.org\/tumor\/tumor-news-fall-2019\/snossa-update\/","title":{"rendered":"SNOSSA Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Second Annual Meeting of the Society for Neuro-oncology of Sub-Saharan Africa (SNOSSA) was held in Cape Town, South Africa, in conjunction with the South African Paediatric Brain Tumor Workshop, the South African Congress of Oncology and the Society of Neurosurgeons of South Africa. The event was a resounding success, with over 160 registrants, nearly doubling the first year\u2019s attendance. With the support of the Greg Wilkins-Barrick Chair in Neurosurgery of the University of Toronto, the Society for Neuro-Oncology (SNO), the European Association of Neuro-Oncology (EANO), Varian, the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, the Krembil Neuroscience Centre and other local and international sponsors, we were able to fund 33 travel scholarships to attend the conference from 13 countries across Africa. There were visiting professors from the AANS\/CNS Tumor Section, including Drs. Rohan Ramakrishna, Shawn Hervey-Jumper, Edjah Nduom and Frederick Lang. Faculty were also represented from SNO and EANO, including Drs. Patrick Wen, Jason Huse and Mark Gilbert of SNO and Riccardo Soffietti of EANO. Chas Haynes, the SNO executive director, shared resources from SNO that SNOSSA members can take advantage of, and he reaffirmed SNO\u2019s commitment to seeing SNOSSA grow in the future. SNOSSA has now become a member of the World Federation of Neuro-Oncology Societies. SNOSSA intends to pursue registration as a non-profit organization in the United States. In 2020, the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> annual SNOSSA conference will be held in Accra, Ghana.
