The AANS/CNS Section on Tumors has been offered the opportunity to influence guidelines beyond organized neurosurgery. In recent months, representatives of the Tumor Section (Brian Nahed, Navid Redjal, Andrew Sloan, Pricilla Brastianos and Jeffrey J. Olson) have been asked to participate in the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the Society for Neuro-oncology Metastatic Brain Tumor Guidelines and Management of Glioma Guideline. Additionally, the American Society for Therapeutic Radiation Oncology has employed the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) for Systematic Review to create guidelines for Radiation Therapy for Brain Metastases. Tumor Section input has been provided in the form of revising key questions in a manner that will allow creation of useful searches and development of meaningful recommendations.
Having participated in the publication of a number of guidelines in the past years, the Tumor Section Guidelines Committee activity is now revolving around the creation of updates to these guidelines as the five-year intervals pass since publication. This includes the Newly Diagnosed Glioblastoma Guideline Update, Progressive Glioblastoma Guideline Update and Low Grade Glioma Guideline Update. Given the volume of citations developed in updated searches for these topics, there remains a need for continued membership volunteerism and participation.
